Hello! My name is Sharlene Hanaway. Welcome to my website. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and the work that I do. I have over 20 years experience of Couples Therapy and Marriage counseling in Lafayette.
I use an eclectic approach to therapy based on what the individuals and circumstance call for. I find much value in utilizing Emotion-Focused Technique which helps individuals understand their own emotional responses, as well as the responses of the significant people in their lives. Research shows that this approach is highly effective for most kinds of relationships.
I also employ Attachment Theory for my Couples Therapy in Lafayette, which explores symptoms alive in the present, brought from the past. With this, excellent results and a reformulation of understanding occur when everyone is able to see how dragging reactions from the past into the present no longer suit them or their relationships.
Beyond providing couples counseling in my private practice, I specialize in working with various kinds of relationships such as sibling, parent-child, friendship, co-worker, employer-employee, marriage and divorce, and have long worked with teens, families and individuals managing depression, anxiety, and panic disorders.
I graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Counseling. I completed 3,000 clinical hours during my internship working with children who suffered the effects of sexual and psychological abuse. I have worked for Contra Costa County Mental Health where I worked with children and families. I have an extensive forensic background where I did psychological evaluations of inmates.
