I have over 20 years experience of Couples Therapy and Marriage counseling in Lafayette.
I use an eclectic approach to therapy based on what the individuals and circumstance call for. I find much value in utilizing Emotion-Focused Technique which helps individuals understand their own emotional responses, as well as the responses of the significant people in their lives. Research shows that this approach is highly effective for most kinds of relationships.
I also employ Attachment Theory for my Couples Therapy in Lafayette, which explores symptoms alive in the present, brought from the past. With this, excellent results and a reformulation of understanding occur when everyone is able to see how dragging reactions from the past into the present no longer suit them or their relationships.
Beyond providing couples counseling in my private practice, I specialize in working with various kinds of relationships such as sibling, parent-child, friendship, co-worker, employer-employee, marriage and divorce, and have long worked with teens, families and individuals managing depression, anxiety, and panic disorders.
I graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology/Counseling. I completed 3,000 clinical hours during my internship working with children who suffered the effects of sexual and psychological abuse. I have worked for Contra Costa County Mental Health where I worked with children and families. I have an extensive forensic background where I did psychological evaluations of inmates.
"I went to Sharlene for a while and she helped me immensely. She especially helped me with my depression as well as how to better manage my anxiety. I highly recommend her!" -Charlotte
"I enthusiastically endorse Sharlene Hanaway. I worked with Sharlene, for a number of years, in detention settings, in Contra Costa County. She was committed/dedicated to her job, arriving early and often leaving later than her scheduled time. She was instrumental in my development as a clinician and a scientific researcher. Her therapeutic orientation followed a humanistic direction, while her progress notes were thorough; included diagnostic impressions, as well as details extremely helpful when developing treatment plans. Her commitment to client's welfare and safety was extraordinary. She left no stones unturned and approached treatment with rigor and clarity, to what is considered an underserved population. "She went far and beyond the job description. I can't imagine a more competent colleague and professional. It was my good fortune to have worked side by side with Sharlene and if I wasn't retired, we'd probably still be working somewhere side by side." -Sigmund
